Owen Park Joins the National Register

The Owen Park neighborhood is Tulsa's most recent addition to the National Register of Historic Places. With the final approval of the Secretary of the Interior, Owen Park joins Maple Ridge, Tracy Park, Brady Heights, Gillette and Swan Lake on the list of Tulsa neighborhoods distinguished by their historic significance.

With boundaries defined as I-244 to Edison and Frisco to Zenith, the district includes Owen Park, Tulsa's oldest park. The structures within the district reflect a diverse range of styles and sizes, ranging from the grand mansions lining Easton to modest Craftsman bungalows along side streets.

National Register listing is an important step for the neighborhood, according to neighborhood association president, Andrea Rogers-Henry. "Anything that will increase Tulsans' awareness about Owen Park will be helpful in rebuilding our neighborhood. Most people are unaware that the neighborhood exists. Placement on the Register confirms that Owen Park was once among Tulsa's premier residential areas. Neighborhood residents are very proud that so many of our historic resources remain intact," said Rogers-Henry, who looks forward to the opportunities National Register listing could provide in the future. Often, Register neighborhoods are targeted for specfic rehabilitation grants and low-interest loans. This economic incentive combined with the Owen Park neighborhood's wonderful location certainly will make investment more attractive.
