A History of the Season’s Final Major
The Tulsa Historical Society and the Professional Golfers’
Association of America present "A History of the Season’s Final Major," which celebrates the history
and tradition of the
PGA Championship. The collection tracks the Championship from the
beginnings of match play to the modern era of stroke play, from Champions like Gene Sarazen and
Walter Hagen to today’s sports icons such as Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. From the
inaugural Championship in 1916 through 2006, visitors will discover two images of the PGA Champion,
one hoisting the Wanamaker Trophy and one in action. Each Champion’s story is told on a brass
plate.
Visitors to the exhibit can see the progression of golf and its
technology by viewing mementos from PGA Champions through clothing, equipment, and scorecards. The exhibit memorabilia
features Slammin’ Sam Snead’s trademark straw hat, John Daly’s driver, and Tiger Woods’ shoes.
The PGA Championship has been conducted at 68 U.S. sites. This
August, Southern Hills Country Club will become the first course to host
four PGA Championships. The course has been the
site of six previous major championships.
“We are pleased to have been selected to host the PGA of America
Championship exhibit at the Tulsa Historical Society. Having previewed the exhibit, we are certain it will capture the
interest of golfers and non-golfers alike,” said Edward C. Lawson, Jr., president emeritus of the Tulsa Historical Society.
The PGA exhibit will be on display at the Tulsa Historical
Society March 31 - August 1, 2007. Regular museum hours have been
extended for this special exhibit: Tuesday 10am - 7pm and Wednesday
- Saturday 10am - 4pm. Admission is FREE. Tour groups of all ages are welcome and
docents are always present during museum hours. To make tour
reservations or for more information, call 712-9484.
